Because of Sevier County, Tennessee’s proximity to Great Smoky Mountain National Park and popular attractions like Dollywood, the area has seen a significant boom in tourism in recent years—along with an increase in the availability of short-term rental properties to accommodate tourists. As a result, the county’s solid waste convenience centers were reaching max capacity for their compactors before the end of the day and being forced to close early. There was pressure from residents to fix the problem. Not only did the county need more convenience centers, they needed the centers to operate more efficiently.

“Their setup is a little unique,” explained Chris. “It’s relatively small and they don’t have scales, so they have implemented a simple system where residents leave trash at no charge and short-term rental cleaning companies pay one of three flat-rate levels based on the amount of trash they leave. They can easily process one-offs or have an account set up for tracking frequent customers.”
