During the past year we have seen an increase in customer requests for ways to both reduce Covid-19 exposure and expedite scale house ticketing times (it seems like a lot of folks took advantage of their quarantine to clean out their garage!). A great example of achieving both goals can be seen in Buncombe County, NC (home of Asheville). Buncombe County Solid Waste has recently implemented the Card-On-File option from our integrated credit card processing partner, Forte. This is one of the great new features of our WasteWORKS/Forte integration, and it’s being utilized at Buncombe County’s Landfill and Transfer Station sites. How does it work? Regular customers are given the option to have their card information stored on Forte’s secure cloud server. And each time these customers visit the landfill or transfer station, their card is charged automatically. This reduces the interaction between employees and customers, and reduces ticketing time—all without the use of a physical credit card. And for the transfer station, they also utilize Card-On-File for their WasteWIZARD express lane customers. This allows them to move even more customers to their WasteWIZARD lane and further reduce interaction between customers and weighmasters.

We reached out to Scale House Supervisor, Randy Riddle for some feedback on their experience with the Card-On-File integration.
Carolina Software: What was the catalyst of implementing Card-On-File? Did residential customers request this as a contactless payment option?
Randy: The catalyst for us wanting to implement credit card on file was to help ease the burden on the manual (WasteWORKS) lane at our transfer station with some of the commercial haulers. We have several commercial haulers that come in numerous times each day, and they were either paying with a credit card that their driver carried, or from a credit card that we stored in paper form. We then had to manually enter them into the Forte device. Our transfer station can easily have 600 to 700 vehicles a day and by getting the credit card on file up and running we were able to divert somewhere between 5 – 7% of the traffic from the manual lane over to the WasteWIZARD lane. This has allowed us to increase the efficiency in handling these commercial haulers, in that we do not have to have a scale house attendant process the ticket. The commercial haulers love this option, as they do not have to sit in the manual lane (which can sometimes be up to 30 minutes), but can breeze right on through the WasteWIZARD lane, and still be able to use their credit card as payment. Most of these commercial haulers that are using the credit card on file have a credit card that is either paying them dollars back, or they’re getting points for redemption.
Carolina Software: Has moving to Care-On-File helped improve the efficiency of processing transactions at the Landfill and Transfer Station?
Randy: Moving to Credit card on file has definitely improved the efficiency at the transfer station and landfill in two ways: Being able to route more commercial traffic to WasteWIZARD, and then for commercial haulers that we chose not to send to WasteWIZARD, just the time in processing the credit card we have on file– as opposed to having to manually enter the credit card information. This has reduced the amount of time needed to handle these customers.
We are working to move more of these commercial haulers that use credit cards as their payment method over to WasteWIZARD as we feel appropriate.
Carolina Software: Are there any other comments you wanted to mention regarding Card-On-File integration with WasteWORKS/Forte?
Randy: Setup of Credit Card on File in WasteWORKS and Forte is extremely easy- following the directions provided by WasteWORKS.
